Bar Bertelli

Signature conviviality at the Collegio alla Querce in Florence

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Florence, Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Collection is a magnificent 16th-century complex reborn as one of Italy’s most exclusive hotels and urban retreats, hosting evenings inspired by the cultural clubs of yesteryear, featuring board games and jazz music.

Following an extensive conservation project, Collegio alla Querce—a prestigious school founded in 1868 by the Barnabite Fathers and closed in 2003—reopened its doors in 2025, breathing new life into the institution’s historic spaces, from the original chapel to the period theater.

Located in the evocative former headmaster’s office, Bar Bertelli—named in honor of one of the school’s past principals—features soft lighting and a private-club atmosphere, serving as a stylish setting to savor the rituals of the aperitivo and after-dinner drinks.

A timeless retreat above the architectural wonders of the Florence skyline.

Il Circolo di Bar Bertelli: cards, mixology, and jazz

To pay homage to the Italian art of socializing, Collegio alla Querce has launched “Il Circolo di Bar Bertelli”—a series of evenings designed to evoke the tradition of the salons and cultural clubs of yesteryear.
For the occasion, Dal Negro—the historic Treviso-based brand that has been a key player in the Venetian art of board gaming since 1756—has created a limited-edition deck of cards customized for Collegio alla Querce.

Each event features a leading name in international mixology—such as Naples’ L’Antiquario (Alex Frezza’s renowned speakeasy, ranked among “The World’s 50 Best Bars”) for the inaugural night—while the soundtrack is provided by the captivating sounds of live jazz.

Grand history meets the art of dining

In addition to Bar Bertelli, Collegio alla Querce offers an exceptional culinary experience centered around La Gamella. Here, local gastronomic traditions are reinterpreted with a contemporary twist, featuring a striking Chef’s Table that takes center stage. The open-view kitchen—located in what was once the school refectory—is truly magnificent; created in collaboration with Officine Gullo, it recreates a traditional Tuscan kitchen using reclaimed terracotta and tiles.

Furthermore, on weekends, the terraced gardens and pool area become the setting for brunches and special events.

The Auberge Collection World

The property—featuring 49 rooms, 28 suites, and 6 grand suites—is the first Italian opening for the American-based Auberge Collection, a brand distinguished by its artisanal approach to hospitality and its commitment to highlighting the historical heritage of its locations.

The Secret

The complex stands on a scenic hill in Florence, about a 10-minute drive from the city center, surrounding an ancient place of worship designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti in the 16th century; the site was linked to a miraculous event involving an oak tree that was subsequently destroyed over the centuries.
