Monteverdi Tuscany

In Val d'Orcia, the romantic village that embodies the Tuscan dream

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Castiglioncello del Trinoro, a small medieval village perched 786 meters above sea level in the municipality of Sarteano, Siena, Monteverdi is an act of love for the great Tuscan beauty and humanistic philosophy.

The rebirth of the village is due to the vision of the American lawyer Michael L. Cioffi. Having arrived in these hills almost by chance in 2003, he fell in love with them and, moved by the desire to bring them back to life, he began to purchase and restore the houses and villas of the town with philological care, in agreement with the locals.

The name chosen, “Monteverdi”, is a double homage: to the hill that hosts the village and to Claudio Monteverdi, the revolutionary Italian composer and humanist. A cultural project before a hotel one, which also led to the archaeological recovery of the ancient Castle of Castiglioncello del Trinoro (1117), whose foundations rest on stones from an ancient Etruscan temple.

What if a person could see Beauty itself, pure, unadulterated, free from mortality, all taint, stain, and vanity, immutable, divine… The person, in that communion, becoming a friend of the Gods, immortal himself… Would that be an experience to be ignored?

(Plato, The Symposium)

Rooms, suites, and private villas immersed in the Renaissance landscape

The village welcomes guests in 30 unique accommodations, born from a dialogue between past and future. Renowned Roman designer Ilaria Miani has curated the intimate feel of the rooms and private residences, using local materials—stone, wood, invisible technology—and furnishings that masterfully combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary accents.

Village Rooms & Village Suites: perfect for immersing yourself in authentic village life.
Tuscan View Suites: dedicated to those who want to wake up overlooking the endless Val d’Orcia.
Monte Cetona Suite: the absolute gem. The largest and most panoramic suite on the property, featuring a spectacular private terrace and a sumptuous travertine bathtub.
Private Residences for Exclusive Use: Monteverdi offers three spectacular independent historic residences: Villa San Pietro (2 bedrooms), Villa Amiata (3 bedrooms), and Villa Muri Antichi (6 bedrooms).

The art of dining, between haute cuisine and tradition

Monteverdi’s gastronomic experience is led by Executive Chef Riccardo Bacciottini, who offers an ever-evolving cuisine, complemented by organic produce grown on the estate’s farm, just 2 km from the village. Numerous options are available, perfect for every need.

Oreade Restaurant: This is Monteverdi’s fine dining gem. Seating just 14, Oreade offers highly sophisticated, avant-garde cuisine. Here, Tuscan tradition is deconstructed and reinterpreted with refined techniques and unique insights, such as the use of essential oils extracted from larch buds.

Osteria Zita: Open from breakfast to dinner, it celebrates the authentic, genuine, and classic flavors of the Tuscan countryside. It also features an elegant Chef’s Table for intimate tastings and experiences.

Culinary Academy: Located in the village’s old school and surrounded by an aromatic herb garden overlooking Mount Cetona, the Culinary Academy is a meeting place dedicated to local gastronomic experiences: private tastings of cheeses, cured meats, wines, and olive oils, and cooking classes where guests can learn to prepare a Tuscan menu under the guidance of the hotel’s brigade, then dine under the pergola in a magical, convivial atmosphere.

Lounge and Terrace Bar: the stunning outdoor terrace that houses the bar, perfect for aperitifs or snacks overlooking the surrounding hills.

Experiences, wine, and culture

Relaxation at Monteverdi begins in the morning with breakfast served al fresco in the village square, in the shadow of the 14th-century Romanesque Church of Sant’Andrea. It continues in the spa, a rejuvenating experience inspired by ancient Roman baths, with pools at different temperatures, a bio-sauna, a Finnish sauna, sensory showers, and the wonderful relaxation room, The Conservatory, overlooking the valley.

There are countless experiences available to book in the surrounding area. Thanks to the historic connection with the Caporali family, such as visits to the renowned Tenuta Valdipiatta estate in the heart of the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano wine region (30 minutes from the village), guests can book tours and private tastings of award-winning organic wines, led by Wine Director Adriana Valentini or directly with internationally renowned producers.

The Secret

The project wasn’t conceived with the intention of creating a hotel, but rather to create a place dedicated to the celebration of art, beauty, and humanity. Following this philosophy, the small church of Sant’Andrea has been transformed into an acoustically perfect auditorium for the Monteverdi Concert Series, featuring free concerts ranging from opera to jazz. The contemporary art gallery hosts rotating exhibitions from the Artist-in-Residence program, which has seen world-renowned artists and playwrights such as Jeremy O. Harris, Laure Prouvost, and Matt Connors reside and create here.
