La Roqqa

In Porto Ercole, a seaside boutique hotel that blends with the history and flavors of Monte Argentario

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Porto Ercole, in a panoramic location overlooking the sea in Monte Argentario, La Roqqa is a 5-star boutique hotel born from a love at first sight for this wonderful area and a desire to protect it.

The story of La Roqqa begins symbolically in the 16th century, when the Spanish built a massive defensive structure in Porto Ercole, known as the Spanish Fortress, also referred to as the Rocca. It was this territory, Monte Argentario, that the Swedish Jonsson family fell in love with a few years ago, to the extent that they acquired several properties, with the intention of celebrating the authenticity of Maremma and making it a high-profile international destination.

Thus, the sustainable restoration of an old hotel gave birth, in the summer of 2023, to La Roqqa, the first 5-star hotel in Porto Ercole, a small fishermen’s town of Monte Argentario in the province of Grosseto. This former island is joined to the mainland by two thin strips of land and overlooked from above by two fortresses, each located at opposite ends.

Roqqa is the fruit of a love at first sight for the incomparable beauty of its nature, the atmosphere of the place, the people who live there, with the desire to protect the territory and ensure its sustainable development.

Paying homage to the history of Argentario, the common areas and 55 rooms and suites were designed by Studio Palomba Serafini Associati, emphasizing the 1960s and 1970s with its most iconic furnishings and drawing inspiration from the local colors, such as Terra di Siena, which recalls the typical hues of the nearby buildings; green, in harmony with the vegetation; and blue, reflecting the sea.

The property offers two restaurants (also open to external guests): Scirocco, with panoramic views of Porto Ercole and the Argentario mountains, and Isolotto Beach Club, located on the seafront at the property’s Beach Club. Both restaurants are overseen by Executive Chef Francesco Ferretti, who celebrates Tuscany’s rich culinary heritage with locally sourced ingredients and traditional techniques that follow the rhythm of the seasons.

The Scirocco Rooftop Bar is perfect for a sunset aperitif, nestled among the treetops, overlooking the Corsini Botanical Garden and the harbor.

Located 5 minutes from the hotel (with shuttle service), the Beach Club is nestled in a pristine bay overlooking the islet from which it takes its name. It features wooden terraces with teak loungers, natural fabrics, and quality waterfront eatery.

La Roqqa also offers a wellness & spa area, a gym, and a concierge service ready to help you discover all the beauties of the wonderful Monte Argentario.

The Secret

Caravaggio’s life ended in Porto Ercole on July 18, 1610, when the brilliant Milanese painter passed away at just thirty-nine years old in this corner of the Tuscan Maremma. Caravaggio had reached the Tuscan village in a hasty escape, attempting to recover the paintings essential to obtaining the papal pardon that would allow him to return to Rome. In his memory, La Roqqa has dedicated the Caravaggio Penthouse Suite, with a panoramic view of Porto Ercole, and the special Caravaggio cocktail list.
