Borgo Pignano

In Volterra, a 5-star organic estate where you can experience all the charm of the Tuscan countryside

by Lavinia Colonna Preti

In Volterra, an organic estate where you can experience the luxury of the Tuscan countryside, with excellent farm-to-table cuisine, charming rooms, and an infinity pool overlooking the romantic surrounding hills.

Borgo Pignano’s origins date back to ancient times, first mentioned on maps dating back to 1139. It was the scene of feudal conflicts until the 17th century, when it became the property of the noble Incontri family, wealthy wool merchants. Marquis Ludovico Incontri, whose name is still engraved on the main villa, chose it as his industrious country residence.

After the neglect of the two world wars, the Borgo was reborn in the 2000s when Sir Michael Moritz, a British financier and patron of the arts, a former journalist for Time magazine and a former member of the Google board, and his wife Harriet Heyman fell in love with the estate and embarked on a major restoration project.

The hills of Tuscany, with their famous estates, villas, and towns that are almost cities, in the most moving countryside in existence.

(Fernand Braudel, historian)

The result is a 5-star eco-resort centered around the main villa, with 14 rooms and suites—including the beautiful Marchese Suite with a four-poster bed and freestanding bathtub—and additional accommodations located in various cottages and farmhouses within the Borgo, renovated with natural materials and the timeless style of the finest noble residences.

The beautiful, heated, panoramic infinity pool, carved from the ancient limestone quarry—the same stone used for the Porta dell’Arco in Volterra and the estate—overlooks a timeless Tuscan landscape.

Thanks to the owners’ passion, Borgo Pignano is also a multi-purpose art gallery, housing a rich collection of works by British artists from the Royal Drawing School, founded by King Charles III. The school hosts various artist residencies that enrich the estate throughout the year.

The Borgo Pignano estate extends over approximately 300 hectares, where olive groves, organic crops, and grains grown from heirloom seeds are cultivated. The white wine “Il Vignino” and the red wine “Rosso del Guardia” are used to make the extraordinary products used in the Borgo’s restaurants.

The jewel in the crown is the Villa Pignano restaurant, offering refined, contemporary cuisine under the guidance of Chef Stefano Cavallini, who trained with Gualtiero Marchesi at his Milanese restaurant and was the first Italian to earn a Michelin star in London at The Halkin Hotel.

The Al Fresco Restaurant, open in the summer, offers traditional seasonal dishes, as well as excellent pizzas cooked in an ancient wood-fired oven. In the winter, the menu moves indoors to Il Camino, a cozy space that combines homely warmth with authentic Tuscan flavors.

Nestled in the old well house, Borgo Pignano also offers a spa where you can regenerate with cryotherapy and relax in the Turkish bath and sauna.

Borgo Pignano is one of the most hamlet villages in Tuscany, dedicated to hospitality that perfectly combines nature, gastronomy, and comfort. The attentive staff will also organize the best experiences, from picnics in the vineyard to horseback rides.

The Secret

The estate also houses the Italian Collection, which celebrates the golden age of Italian industry with a fascinating selection of vintage cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, from FIAT and Alfa Romeo to Moto Guzzi and Vespa.
