In an ancient country estate dating back to 1622 surrounded by willows and olive trees, Lupaia in Torrita di Siena is a romantic retreat that perfectly embodies the authentic Tuscan dream.
The resort Lupaia, or as its habitués affectionately call it “la Lupaia”, is a small Eden surrounded by vineyards and olive trees with a truly spectacular panorama that extends from Montepulciano to the village of Montefollonico.
Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Lupaia was born from the bucolic dream of Christopher and Heidi, a couple of Austrian professionals with an established career in international marketing, who here have found their “place of the heart”, leaving everything behind to devote themselves to a hospitality project that combines a refined decor with a warm and familiar atmosphere.
We wanted to create a romantic retreat for travelers looking for a unique experience, giving life to what has always been our dream relais.
(Christopher & Heidi Mueller, owners)
Five beautifully restored farmhouses house twelve rooms, divided into Standard, Deluxe and Suites, some overlooking the church of San Biagio in Montepulciano, others Montefollonico, all surrounded by a garden, to enjoy maximum privacy. The infinity pool overlooking the valley is truly spectacular, surrounded by sunbeds and a lovely pool bar to enjoy a refreshing drink.
The rooms have been furnished with great taste and personality by Christopher and Heidi themselves, which are both great travelers and interior design enthusiasts. The style is a pleasant mix between the cornerstones of the Tuscan style, such as exposed stone, wood and terracotta, and antique-style furnishings such as large velvet sofas, English-style bookcases and Provençal cupboards.
The splendid open kitchen is the soul of the Relais, that lives from morning to evening under the guidance of chef Andrea Sisti who here prepares fabulous “à la carte” breakfasts, lunches and dinners in the name of the best Tuscan flavors prepared with organic and local products. The aromatic herb and vegetable garden, besides supplying the kitchen, are also the protagonists of the cooking lessons organized by the Chef exclusively for guests.
The restaurant, that for dinner is open to the public upon reservation, offers a perfect setting for a light lunch or dinner. During the Summer the tables are set up al fresco, in a magnificent green setting. Among the main dishes, we find homemade pasta, such as pici, tagliatelle and gnocchi, seasoned with the sauce “of the day”. The wine list is the mirror of a generous territory, between Chianti, Montepulciano and Montalcino, where the best Tuscan wines are born. In addition to the great classics, including the Chianti produced with grapes from the sorrounding vineyards, the list favors small “niche” wineries in order to always offer something surprising to the Relais’ guests.
The relaxed atmosphere of the Relais invites you to take your time without looking at the clock, indulging in the magic of Tuscan life; at the library, where guests can read a book, or at the bar, where you can try signature cocktails such as the Lupaia Fizz and the Vintage Negroni.
Not to be missed, in the summer, is the Sunset Negroni Experience: a romantic aperitif, set up exclusively for guests who request it, to enjoy the magnificent view of Montepulciano while sipping a truly unforgettable drink!
The Secret
The name Lupaia dates back to the name of the ancient Tuscan farm on which the structure was born and means “the hill of the wolves”. According to legend, it seems in fact that the surrounding area was once populated by wolves. At the entrance to the structure, just before the reception, you can see a small red lantern, found during the renovation works and thus elected as the symbol of the Lupaia.
